What can go wrong when traveling? Well, there are a lot of things and death could be one of them. Take, for example, what happened to Sarah Katherine Carter, who reportedly died on her travel to northern Thailand because of a chemical used to kill bed bugs.

Carter, with her two friends Amanda Eliason and Emma Langlands, arrived in Chang Mai on Ferbruary 2. The next day, all three fell ill for what initially thought of caused by food poisoning. Later that day, the condition of the three improved, but then during the evening things turned worse especially for Carter. She had a heart attack, and her kidney failed resulting to her death.

Apart from Carter, there were three others who died in the same downtown inn where she and her friends stayed and three more within the city. And because all of them suffered the same symptoms, further investigation was conducted.

According to Ron McDowall, a UN scientist, the death of the Kiwi tourist and six others was caused by over exposure to a toxic chemical. That chemical basically refers to chlorpyrifos that was used by the hotel to get rid of bed bugs. His theory was backed up even by experts from New Zealand and Italy.

In deep grief, Carter’s parents hope that action will be taken to prevent the same incident.

Sarah Katherine Carter, 23, and her two friends Amanda Eliason and Emma Langlands fell ill on February 3 while staying at the Downtown Inn in Chiang Mai, in northern Thailand.

Early reports said eating toxic seaweed cost Ms Carter her life, but now six other tourists have died in the city after suffering from similar symptoms, and three who died had stayed in the same hotel, NZ Herald reports.

An investigation aired by New Zealand’s 60 Minutes program on TV3 found traces of the insecticide chlorpyrifos, used to kill bedbugs, in the hotel room Ms Carter was staying in, stuff.co.nz reports.
