Bed bugs are common house pests. Though they can not really cause serious health effects, still their infestation can bring negative consequences. To avoid those, they must be gotten rid off not in any other way but one that is sure to be effective.

It is said that bed bugs had been in existence for a very long time now. Reference to them can be found in the works of Artistotle and Aristophanes. A 3 500 year old bed bug fossil found in Egypt also proves that indeed, they have been living far too long with humans.

There was a time though that these bed insects were claimed to be almost eliminated. That was specifically said to be after the World War II. A pest control approach with the use of DDT was claimed to be the one that did it. But then, these pests had come back to wreck havoc again not only to houses but to hospitals, inns, hotels and probably even the rest world.

The increase in international travels is the pointed culprit of the widespread outbreak of bed bugs. They are fast moving, small and can live long without food so they can sneak in a baggage and stay there for a long time without being detected. When brought to another place, they then start to multiply wherever that is as long as they have food and the temperature is favorable. Because of that, anybody can be a victim of those blood-sucking bed insects.

And so with those negative effects, you can't just be helpless and let them overtake your houses. There are things that you can do to stop their infestation. Here are the three general guidelines that will help you.

  • Identify what elimination method to use – There is more than one method that you can use to get rid of bed bugs. In a number of cases, one method is enough to get the elimination done. In some cases though, combining the methods is needed and is more effective. However, wrong choice of what method can also cause the process' failure. To avoid that, it is therefore important that you know what method or methods are the most appropriate for you to use.

  • Implement Follow-up Steps – As been mentioned, bed bugs are small bed insects. They are also flat so they can easily hide themselves on cracks and crevices. Therefore, it is possible to miss them in one of your cleaning. If there would still be bed bugs present after you have implemented the removal process, it does not automatically means that the method did not work. It might be that you just have not taken out all the bed bugs so you have to implement follow-up steps to completely get rid of them.

  • Prevent its Entrance – Bed bugs can't infest if it can't enter the house in the first place. Keep them outside your door to prevent whatever negative effects they can bring. General thing that you can do is inspects items, baggage and furniture from other places if they are free from bed insects before letting them in.
