Life is harder with bed bugs around. I’m pretty sure everybody will agree with us on that. But there are a lot of ways to get rid of them so don’t despair.
But is there are an effective means to kill bed bugs without spending big? That’s specifically what one of our readers wants to know.
my grandmother has bed bug. can you tell me how to get rid of them, also what can i use that wont cost alot of money!
Here’s one of the responses we got from our other readers:
OOOOh I am so sorry to hear that. We were on a cruise with them and brought them home. I hired an exterminator. They can be VERY difficult to get rid of. Hire a pro! In Maryland it cost $400 to hire a pro.
You need to launder everything in the home (clothes drapes etc) on hot, dry atleast 20 min on high or dry clean. Store in space bags.
Vaccume the furniture, beds, floors etc. throw out the bag. Exterminate.
This may need to be repeated several times.
The bugs can live up to 1 year+ with out a blood meal. They can be smaller than a poppy seed and reproduce like crazy. They are nocturnal and hide in cracks and crevices. They are also VERY good hitch hikers. be careful that no one else gets them.Good Luck! I know how crazy this made me. I canceled Thanksgiving dinner and would not go to any one elses home until I knew we wiped them out.
Here’s Our Take:
But of course, there are a lot of inexpensive ways to kill bed bugs. You have to note though that they are only applicable to minor infestations. If your grandmother’s bed bug infestation is massive, the best course of action is to hire a professional bed bug exterminator. But sad to say, professional bed bug exterminations are quite costly.
Assuming that your grandmother’s bed bug problem is still minor and if you think you can handle it yourself, you can use a bed bug spray to get rid of the pests. There are many bed bug killers that you can purchase in reasonable prices. However, you should purchase a green bed bug spray to keep you and your grandmother away from exposure to harmful chemicals.
For other inexpensive methods to get rid of bed bugs, you can steam the area infested or vacuum it.
However, none of those treatments will completely work if they are not directed to the exact area infested so conduct a thorough inspection first.
If you think the infestation is in the bed, here’s a help on how to inspect it.

Infested bedding and garments will need to be bagged and laundered (120°F minimum), or discarded since these items cannot be treated with insecticides. Smaller items that cannot be laundered can sometimes be de-infested by heating. Individual items, for example, can be wrapped in plastic and placed in a hot, sunny location for at least a few days (the 120°F minimum target temperature should be monitored in the centermost location with a thermometer). Bedbugs also succumb to cold temperatures below freezing, but the chilling period must be maintained for at least two weeks. Attempts to rid an entire home or apartment of bed bugs by raising or lowering the thermostat will be entirely unsuccessful. Vacuuming can be very useful for removing bugs and eggs from mattresses, carpet, walls, and other surfaces. Pay particular attention to seams, tufts and edges of mattresses and box springs, and the perimeter edge of wall-to-wall carpets. Afterward, dispose of the vacuum contents in a sealed trash bag. Steam cleaning of carpets is also helpful for killing bugs and eggs that vacuuming may have missed. Repair cracks in plaster and glue down loosened wallpaper to eliminate bed bug harborage sites. Remove and destroy wild animal roosts and bird nests when possible.
