What can go wrong when traveling? Well, there are a lot of things and death could be one of them. Take, for example, what happened to Sarah Katherine Carter, who reportedly died on her travel to northern Thailand because of a chemical used to kill bed bugs.

Carter, with her two friends Amanda Eliason and Emma Langlands, arrived in Chang Mai on Ferbruary 2. The next day, all three fell ill for what initially thought of caused by food poisoning. Later that day, the condition of the three improved, but then during the evening things turned worse especially for Carter. She had a heart attack, and her kidney failed resulting to her death.

Apart from Carter, there were three others who died in the same downtown inn where she and her friends stayed and three more within the city. And because all of them suffered the same symptoms, further investigation was conducted.

According to Ron McDowall, a UN scientist, the death of the Kiwi tourist and six others was caused by over exposure to a toxic chemical. That chemical basically refers to chlorpyrifos that was used by the hotel to get rid of bed bugs. His theory was backed up even by experts from New Zealand and Italy.

In deep grief, Carter’s parents hope that action will be taken to prevent the same incident.

Sarah Katherine Carter, 23, and her two friends Amanda Eliason and Emma Langlands fell ill on February 3 while staying at the Downtown Inn in Chiang Mai, in northern Thailand.

Ms Carter’s companions recovered, but she died the next day at the Chiang Mai Ram Hospital from a heart attack and kidney failure.

Early reports said eating toxic seaweed cost Ms Carter her life, but now six other tourists have died in the city after suffering from similar symptoms, and three who died had stayed in the same hotel, NZ Herald reports.

An investigation aired by New Zealand’s 60 Minutes program on TV3 found traces of the insecticide chlorpyrifos, used to kill bedbugs, in the hotel room Ms Carter was staying in, stuff.co.nz reports.

===========

There are many negative things that bed bugs can bring but death is not one of them. However, toxic chemicals can surely take a life. And so no matter how irritating bed bugs are chemicals should never be used to get rid of them.

Green bed bug killers are now available in the market. They are safe for pets, humans and the environment all while being effective. If you don’t want to put yours and other’s people life at risk while getting rid of the blood-sucking pests, you should therefore, ditch the use insecticides made of dangerous chemicals.

Bed bugs are already an annoyance. Added with the fact that most people tend to get rid of bed bugs by spraying insecticides or pesticides all over their household, dealing with bed bugs became a more bothersome thing to get done with. And since many people can’t actually pull off a complete process of eliminating those insects due to lack of time and effort as well as inappropriate methods and bed bug treatment, it is quite impossible to totally get rid of its presence.

But how can you possibly get rid of bed bugs without using any pesticides or chemically-enhanced bed bug sprays? Is the method of killing bed bugs without those chemicals effective? But nobody wants a laborious method of pest control. As much as possible, people would want to get rid of such bed insects as fast as they can with little or no contact with the pests. Bed bugs have already caused you so much trouble and the least that you would want to happen is have them breed inside your own dwelling.

Bed bugs are fast, little, creepy bed insects which you can never really kill if you’re not able to locate their hiding place. That is why it is a must that you first trace their tracks so you will know where they have been seeking refuge. Upon knowing their location, exterminating those bed bugs is no longer impossible. Just bear in mind that bed bugs don’t stay in one place so it is wise to check all of the possible places where they could hide such as cracks or crevices on your walls as well as fixtures. A systematic way of locating bed bugs can save you from tons of further worries.

You can always say goodbye to bed bugs in a non-toxic manner or as eco-friendly as you can. Chemicals and toxic are already a thing of the past in terms of pest control and home cleaning. Now, through the going green campaign, organic bed bug treatments have been made possible. On the other hand, you can also get rid of bed bugs without the application of any insect sprays and the like. You can use a specific vacuum or go for the efficacy of steam cleaning. The bottom line is, bed bug removal and other means of pest control need not the employment of toxic or chemicals.

Go green as much and as often as you can especially if it concerns your home and family. If you want to safely, effectively and conveniently get rid of bed bugs and other pests at home, consider the aid of organic products.

Appearance, general information

Bed bugs are wingless insects, small or about 1/4 inch in length, usually oval with flat bodies and are reddish-brown in color. They came from the insect family called Cimicidae and of course, they feed themselves with blood such as that taken from the humans and even animals.

These insects prefer to inhabit places or stuffs where they can easily gain access to their prey. Their typical place for feeding and hiding are the mattresses, sofas, and other furniture where the host would usually seek comfort; so as their name implies. Although bed bugs are not really nocturnal insects, they tend to strike during night time or when the host is in deep slumber.

When a bug feeds itself, it injects saliva which contains anticoagulants and anaesthetics so the host won’t feel any pain or whatsoever. That is the reason why many people are not aware that they are actually making themselves a feast for those pests. Responses to bed bug infestations and their bites usually vary but the common effects are anxiety, stress, and insomnia. Skin infections and scars are the most apparent since bed bug bites tend to produce swollen bumps and rashes.

Existence

It was before World War II that such insects became rampant in the U.S. And during the time when the pesticide DDT was extensively put to use, bed bugs grew smaller in number. However, their existence was still widespread to other areas even up to now. In fact, bed bugs seemed to have reached the surface again to bring so much terror and annoyance to many households.

Recently, there had been quite an increase in bed bug infestations. Some of the reasons which many people consider include the restriction on the use of pesticides and other toxic insect sprays or repellents, the need or inclination of many people to travel, increase in immigration and people transferring from one apartment or house to another. The inability to eradicate those pests without delay can also encourage the expansion of its growth or production.

Location, hiding place

As the name implies, bed bugs are fond of hiding underneath or on the corners of your beds or mattresses. They always see to it that you can’t easily find and hunt them. However, there are lots of ways to catch them doing their deeds, trap those bed bugs and kill them. Such bed insects usually hide themselves into tiny cracks and crevices making it hard for you to get rid of bed bugs.

Obviously, unclean households are a very suitable place for bed bugs. Houses where dwellers are in a crowd are more susceptible to bed bug infestation. However, so long as they can detect heat waves or human body temperature with accord to the presence of carbon dioxide, bed bugs would exist. On the other hand, they don’t last long on tropical places even though they get attracted to warmth or heat waves. That’s also the reason why steam cleaning is effective in killing bed bugs.
