The number of bed bug infestation decreased in a number of places. Nationally though, bed-bug-related complaints have increased. Sioux Falls in South Dakota is one of the cities experiencing the rise in bed bug cases. To address the problem, Sioux Fall’s Health Department is spreading awareness about the pests. It also provides guidelines as how to prevent bed bug infestation. The city’s Program Coordinator, Denise Patton, even warned residents to not be fooled by the pests’ name. Though they are named as “bed bugs”, they can actually infest even appliances, walls and almost anything, she said.

However, despite being discovered in students’ backpacks, Patton added that schools are not likely to get infested. But given that bed bugs are small, are quick to hide and hitchhike and are lovers of high-traffic places, are schools really safe from their presence?

As more people in the United States are feeling the bed bug’s bite, there has been a spike in illnesses from pesticides used to kill the insects, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention CDC.L reported on Thursday.

From 2003 to 2010, 111 people were sickened and one died from bed bug insecticide, the government agency reported in a study that is the first of its kind in the country.

Nearly three quarters of the illnesses occurred from 2008 to 2010 as the bed bug population in the United States increased.

Pesticide-related illnesses occurred in seven states: California, Florida, Michigan, North Carolina, New York, Texas and Washington. Some 81 percent of cases were not severe.

New York City, where there were increasing reports of bed bug infestations, had the largest number of cases at 58 percent. Nationwide, 93 percent of the cases were in private homes, the study found.

Although the CDC said there have not been enough cases of serious illness to suggest a large public health burden, the numbers might continue to increase as bed bugs become more resistant to common pesticides.

“They told me they were looking for bed bugs,” said tenant Edward Jones.

Jones lives in the ManorCare Nursing and Rehab, Euclid Beach facility along with 140 other people. Staff members changing sheets first noticed the tiny blood suckers a few weeks ago and called in a dog trained to sniff them out.

“He looked around in my room and took off,” said Jones.
