These past few years, bed bug infestation has been causing havoc. There were many reports about the pests invading homes, hospitals, hotels and even libraries. And just recently, their invasion has caused a fire in an Ohio home.

Technically, it was not the bed bugs that directly burned the house. It was the bed bug treatment that was executed by an exterminator.

The exterminator basically used heat to kill bed bugs. To raise the temperature in the house, he used six heaters, and he said that one of them malfunctioned. It caught the carpet and a fire soon started, which was not immediately detected.

Because of machine malfunction, all the bed bugs were killed. However, never was it a good thing as it burned down the whole house. It made the price of bed bug elimination much higher than it should be as two families lost their home because of it.

Fire officials in Cincinnati say a two-family home was destroyed when a heater being used to kill bedbugs set a carpet on fire.

The house was being treated Sunday by an exterminator who says he gets rid of the pests by raising a home’s temperature to 135 degrees using propane heaters. Residents are told to leave and remove anything flammable.

Cincinnati Fire District Chief Glenn Coleman says the carpet was ignited by one of six heaters inside the home. The fire went undetected until a neighbor saw smoke pouring from the house.

The exterminator, Richard Tyree, blames an equipment malfunction for the fire and tells The Cincinnati Enquirer he’s never had a problem before. He says his company has insurance.
