Check the tufts and seams of mattresses too. Look for brown or red spots on the linens. Check in drawers of dressers and desks for live bugs, dead bug bodies or cast bug skins.
Be VERY careful about a used piece furniture; make sure you know where it comes from. Mattresses and bed frames can be especially at risk of harboring bed bugs and their eggs. Do not even consider taking furniture left in the street.
